view from our balcony
Croatia had sat at the top of my travel wish list for a long time, so when a best friend asked me to be a bridesmaid at her wedding, which just happened to be on a private island off Hvar; I was only too happy to oblige.
Thats not entirely true, I was actually quite apprehensive about if I would be able to do a good job as bridesmaid and fully support her on the day. Intrepid bebe was about 16 months at the time, we had only a few weeks later emigrated from Australia, and the prospect of two flights, a couple of ferry crossings and a trip in a speed boat, with a non sleeping, non sitting still small person-well I was a little nervous.
In fact it all went reasonably smoothly, the wedding was perfect, Croatia did not disappoint with it’s beauty, and the people were so friendly! I was left with such an impression of the Croatian people going the extra mile to accommodate out little family. From chatting to and entertaining intrepid bebe, to supplying her with replacement ballons when hers popped (a stranger literally crossed the street to give us one). People offering blankets when I was changing her, or offering to prepare special meals when we were out. Beautiful beautiful people.

As you can probably tell I was smittened! As usual we flew with BA, for once we didn’t use Airbnb but instead found our Apartment through Booking.com. Villa M&M was spacious with a large balcony & great views. There was a swimming pool and BBQ, and it was good value. Down sides were lots of stairs and no lift, and, as with a lot of the accommodation in Hvar, it’s up a steep hill, which made for a workout with all the bags and the pram.
with the infamous balloons
Hvar is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s not difficult to see why. The marble paving is so smooth you want to stroke it.
Most of our time was taken up with Wedding Festivities, but we did get a chance to wander round both Split, and Hvar, and enjoy the excellent Seafood. If you like cake (is the answer ever no??), LUKA does both sugar loaded and sugar free options, ice cream and great coffee. We will certainly be back to see more of this amazing country, and throughly suggest you book a trip too!
